Confidence is 75 percent of the game. NO ONE is gonna want to work with you if you present yourself as needy, approval-seeking, and thin-skinned. I know this turf: I have sympathy for how you feel but I don't think YOU know how you're coming across. A lot of what you're saying seems to be making mountains out of molehills. So what if the guy likes to write his own intros? To moan and groan about how you wanted writing practice is to the point. All that effing matters for YOUR future is publishing. YOU are framing his quirk as some kind of career obstacle, when all it is some idiot's preference that you have to tolerate for a year. You talk about your advisor wanting to add authors to your paper. LOOK, authorships are awarded BY CONVENTION. Evidently, the convention in your field is to include people who collected data. I'm saying there's no need to take it personally. More than that, I'm saying do NOT expect your advisor to make exceptions for you. Do NOT expect colleagues to think: "oh, it's her passion" or "oh, remember how she pushed to do this research." It plain doesn't work that way. The personal stuff DOES NOT MATTER. Of course, the you work with knows people in your field. That's GOOD. Who wants to do a postdoc with an unknown? It's only a year YOU are framing it as some huge career barricade, when in reality it's ONE dumb year of getting along with someone and tolerating his reminders that it's his lab. YOU are making the issues bigger than they have to be. And looking for more support and approval than you'll ever, ever get from academic colleagues. This was my lecture. I'm trying to shake you out of lost, helpless, awfulizing mode. I'll write some solutions in another post. (Later probably.)
